Themed projects

Every 3-4 months, we start a new project which focuses on one ‘theme’ of diversity. Each project produces 2-4 picture books and collects short stories for a YA anthology.

When we have calls for a project open, you can find specific guidelines at the calls for submissions page, but here are some general guidelines.

Picture books

Please send the following to submissions@inkandlocket.com, with the subject text formatted as follows: “[PROJECT NAME]: [BOOK TITLE] – [YOUR NAME]”.

  • your complete manuscript, attached, in .pdf, .doc or .docx format
  • your covering letter, in the body of the email.

We will get back to you within 6 weeks of the submission period’s closing date.

Notes for submitters

  • Please read the project description carefully. If we ask for same-sex parents, don’t send us straight grandparents. If we ask for heroes in wheelchairs, don’t send us mice in a rowboat. Other than that, we want to see creative and exciting stories, strong narratives and interesting characters.
  • We firmly believe that diversity shouldn’t be plot, just reality. So if we ask for those heroes in wheelchairs, don’t let character’s heroism be their wheelchair.
  • If you have illustrated your own work (or would like to!), you’re welcome to send us a couple of sketches, drawings or ideas in .jpg format for consideration. If you don’t illustrate, that’s fine! We work with many talented artists, and we’ll pair you up with someone we believe will bring your characters to life.
  • We are a newly formed, mostly volunteer-run publishing house, so we do not currently offer advances on royalties. We do, however, offer a really good royalty deal, author copies, a good discount for additional copies, and our project marketing.

YA anthology short stories

Please send the following to submissions@inkandlocket.com, with the subject text formatted as follows: “[GENRE]: [BOOK TITLE] – [YOUR NAME]”.

  • your complete short story, attached, in .pdf, .doc or .docx format
  • your covering letter, in the body of the email.

We will get back to you within 6 weeks of the submission period’s closing date.

Notes for submitters

  • Please read the appropriate project description carefully. Some projects have carefully selected genres, others do not.
  • Most of our anthologies are dependent upon funding, but each published story will be paid a small one-time sum plus royalties, and the author will receive copies of the finished anthology in each available format, as well as a discount on further copies. The sum and number of copies offered will be detailed in each project’s description.

Take a look at our general submission guidelines for more information about the submission process, and check out our covering letter guide if you’re unsure what to put in your covering letter.
